Granny Craft Collection 2011

SohIm Granny Craft Collection Launched in November 2011

Together with Patricia - the craft lady, SohIm Atelier is born. The collaboration came about when I jammed at Pat's craft room and was overwhelmed by Pat's crafts - bags, designers' fabrics, clothes and so on. While I had a series of illustrations drawn over the years, Pat thought that it was a good idea to have the illustrations printed on fabric that could make into crafts of all sorts. In November, SohIm launched the first granny bag series - Granny Crafts at Goodwood Park Hotel Singapore.

The illustrations are printed using large format digital textile printers that show greater design detail than screen printing. Printed on natural fiber textiles, the ink pigment is eco-friendly and water-based. The fabric can also be machine washed, either warm or cool using phosphate-free detergent. To enhance the finishing further, the exterior fabrics are mostly designers' fabric, such as Amy Butler, Alexander Henry, Patricia Bravo and so on. Every piece is one of a kind and is hand crafted by the designers.

The illustrations are further developed into clutch bags of different sizes.

Moments of Life

'Moments of Life' illustration is a continuous visual observations and interpretations of my sentiments towards people on the streets and their moments of life in the Orient.

The mid-twentieth century was the beginning of capitalist business investments from foreign investors. Various cities were then prospered with international investments. However, these were often contradicted with poverty, leading to widening of disparity between the rich and the poor. Like any other big cities, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Taipei, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Lhasa, Cairo, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Kyoto are still flooded with human traffic, billboards, skyscrapers, etc.

The illustrations posed strong conviction of the people on the streets living at the periphery in this contemporary society. While it is not the artist's intention to advocate a state of world utopia or criticize the phenomenon of inevitable rapid economic conditions and advancements, it aims to reinforce the existence of these street people and their encounters from a humanistic perspective.
